CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- The University of Northern Iowa's Rialto Dining Center has been awarded a Blue Zones Restaurant Certification. This designation is given to restaurants that complete a set of criteria by implementing changes that create a healthy dining environment.

Actions taken by Rialto which contributed to the certification include: providing menus and nutritional information online, serving healthy sides with entrees, making half portions available, using plates sized 10 inches or smaller, posting signage promoting healthy options for children, maintaining a smoke free environment, and offering a minimum of three healthy dishes at each meal.

The Blue Zones project is an initiative designed to improve community well-being and make healthy choices through permanent changes to environment, policy and social networks. Cedar Falls currently has five restaurants with the Blue Zones designation.
