UNI Women's Rugby Club advances to national tournament

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- The University of Northern Iowa Women's Rugby Club will play in the national Division II tournament in San Jose, Calif., on May 3. The Panthers advanced after defeating the College of Charleston, 10-7; and St. Joseph's University, 27-14, in the Elite Eight tournament at UNI April 19-20. The UNI women are the defending national champions.

'The dedication it has taken these student athletes to get to the national championship is amazing,' said Tim Klatt, associate director/recreation & sport clubs with UNI Wellness & Recreation Services. 'This is a club sport. The players are not on scholarship. Most of them were involved in other sports in high school and just got involved in rugby when they entered college.'

The UNI Men's Rugby Club played in the Elite Eight tournament at Sam Houston University and was defeated in the first round by Claremont College, 31-7. They went on to play Arkansas in the consolation match, winning11-0.

The women's team is coached by Steve Murra, with Jennifer Murra as faculty/staff adviser. The men's team is coached by Jason Nottger; Lt. Col. Ronald Albrecht is the faculty/staff adviser.
