CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The Department of Mathematics at the University of Northern Iowa will present the 2018 Hari Shankar Memorial Lecture at 7:30 p.m., Friday, April 6, in the Lantz Auditorium of McCollum Science Hall on the UNI campus.

This year’s lecture is titled “Beautiful, Deep and Interesting: Surprises in Elementary Math” and will be presented by Sybilla Beckmann, the Josia Meigs distinguished teaching professor of mathematics in the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Georgia. Beckmann is also the author of the textbook “Mathematics for Elementary Teachers,” now in the fifth edition and used by the Department of Mathematics at UNI.

The lecture will take an excursion through some of the connections and subtleties that make elementary math surprisingly beautiful, deep and interesting. Audiences will see that even pre-school and elementary school math is not so elementary when you look at it closely.
