UNI to host inclusion and communication conference

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- The University of Northern Iowa will host the 2014 Midwest Summer Institute: Inclusion and Communication for All on Monday, June 23, and Tuesday, June 24, in Russell Hall.

The conference will consist of presentations, discussions, panels, hands-on learning and networking. Attendees will include educators, individuals with and without disabilities, families, support personnel and researchers.

The Midwest Summer Institute will focus on inclusive schools, employment and daily living, as well as communication and supported typing for people with autism spectrum disabilities and other complex communication needs.

The event will feature nationally recognized and area experts on school and community inclusion and alternative and augmentative communication supports. Presenters include Kathie Snow of Disability is Natural; Darlene Hanson, director of communication supports at Whittier Area Parents' Association for the Developmentally Handicapped; and Tracy Thresher, self-advocate featured in the award-winning documentary "Wretches & Jabberers."
