UNI to host forum on the 'Economic Impact of Refugees in Iowa'

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- The University of Northern Iowa's Department of Economics and the Lawrence M. Jepson International Endowment will present a forum on the "Economic Impact of Refugees in Iowa" from 7 to 9 p.m., Thursday, March 29, in the Commons Ballroom on the UNI campus.

Panelists will discuss whether refugees in Iowa help or hurt the economic growth of Iowa, how refugees impact the local job market and how refugees are changing Iowa. They will also give a brief presentation about the history of refugees in Iowa and how the U.S. compares to other countries in terms of refugee settlement.

Panelists include: Loren Bawn, Bureau of Refugee Service, Iowa Department of Human Services; Bram T. Elias and Hannah Shirey, College of Law, University of Iowa; Mark Grey, sociology, anthropology and criminology, University of Northern Iowa; and Mallory Petsche, EMBRAC, Waterloo.
