CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- The University of Northern Iowa will host Baushuan Ger, the director general of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Chicago, at 6 p.m., on Thursday, Sept. 20, in the Curris Business Building, Room 109.

Ger will present his lecture, "Taiwan: A Strong Partner of the U.S. in East Asia," which will address Taiwan-U.S. relations, the Cross-Straits Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement and its impact, Taiwan's role in promoting trade and regional economic integration, as well as prospects of Taiwan-U.S. partnerships. A question and answer session will follow.

Ger represents the Government of the Republic of China (Taiwan) in the Midwest region. He is committed to enhancing cultural, economic and trade relations between Taiwan and the Midwest. Prior to assuming his current position, Ger served as deputy director general of the Department of East Asian and Pacific Affairs in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Taiwan. The Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Chicago has provided generous financial support this year to allow UNI to offer classes in the Chinese language, and provides grants to UNI faculty to pursue research collaborations in Taiwan.  Since 2009, UNI's connections have included student exchange and faculty research collaborations with Taiwan's National Chengchi University - one of Taiwan's finest universities.

"I am delighted that Director General Ger is honoring UNI with a visit," said Craig Klafter, associate provost for International Programs. "Taiwan has been one of the United States' strongest partners in Asia, and it offers significant opportunities to UNI and Iowa for educational, research and trade relations."

This event is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Nadia Korobova, assistant director of UNI International Programs, at 319-273-7424 or
