CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- Two University of Northern Iowa students have been chosen to exhibit at the 2003 Des Moines Art Festival Emerging Iowa Artist Program June 27-29. The Emerging Iowa Artist Program is a new component of the festival and offers free booth space to art students who are Iowa residents enrolled in an institution of higher education. Students may exhibit and sell their works.

David Schmitz and Angela Pease were two of 15 students chosen to participate in the festival, based on an application and submitted slides. Schmitz, from Charles City, is a freshman art major with an emphasis in drawing. He will be showing 15-20 works in pencil, charcoal, pen and ink, and pastel.

Pease, from Cedar Falls, is a senior BFA art major with an emphasis in painting. She will be exhibiting mixed media 3-D works including 'Pushing Reverence,' an encaustic and wood piece. Encaustic is a painting technique that uses melted beeswax. Schmitz and Pease also will demonstrate their techniques during the festival.

The students' work also can be seen during the Arts in April celebration on the UNI campus.

The Des Moines Art Festival, which began in 1998, is ranked the sixth-best fine arts festival in the nation.
