CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- University of Northern Iowa sophomore Karelyn Pohl took second place in Pop-Tarts® Pop-it-Forward™ Contest and won 100,000 Pop-Tarts® toaster pastries. Pohl has decided to donate 95,000 of the Pop-Tarts to a variety of charities, including a few food pantries in her hometown of Davenport, Iowa as well as to military overseas. The remaining 5,000 Pop-Tarts will go to UNI.

With the help of the Kellogg Company, Pohl decided to use the 5,000 Pop-Tarts in ice cream treats during an afternoon festival from noon to 3 p.m., Friday Sept. 23, on the Lawther Hall Field on the UNI campus. The event will include live music, games and other activities.

"I think it will be a great opportunity for everyone on campus to de-stress for one day and have a little bit of free food because that is what every college student looks forward to," said Pohl.

The Pop-It-Forward Contest was a national search for fun and creative ideas for sharing one million Pop-Tarts toaster pastries. Pohl entered the competition through Facebook, by answering the question, "How would you share 1,000,000 Pop-Tarts?" Her idea was to put Pop-Tarts in ice cream and share the treats with as many people as possible.

"I learned about the event through a TV commercial more than a year ago and decided to enter the contest just for fun. I thought it would be awesome to win the Pop-Tarts and share them with other college students. Now I get to give something back to my community too."
