CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- A University of Northern Iowa student group, the Student Council Exceptional Children (SCEC), recently completed Project ICAN Books: Inclusive Classroom Awareness Nurtured Through Books. The project provides age appropriate inclusive literature to schools throughout Cedar Falls and Waterloo. Project ICAN Books offers teachers classroom activities, such as discussion cards, WebQuests and unit lessons, which are linked to the books provided by SCEC.
SCEC hopes to increase the awareness of the diverse needs of children in schools by providing children's book to schools. The Cedar Falls Kiwanis funded the ICAN Books project for classroom teachers to help students learn more about disabilities.
"With the hard work that was put into this project, I'm excited to see how these books influence the students and impact their outlook on students with disabilities," said Sophie Haarhues, student leader of the project.
The student group is lead by Susan Brennan assistant professor and Christina Curran, associate professor in special education. For more information, contact Brennan at 319-273-7841 or email@example.com.
