UNI set to compete in 2013 Solar Splash

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- The University of Northern Iowa's solar boat team will compete again in this year's Solar Splash World Championship of Intercollegiate Solar Boat Racing. The UNI team has participated in the event since 2002 and has placed in the top five overall since 2007.

The City of Cedar Falls, along with a host of other sponsors, will support the event this year, which will be held Wednesday, June 12, through Sunday, June 16, at George Wyth State Park.

During the five-day event, Solar Splash teams earn points in seven categories, including technical inspections and reports, engineering design, visual displays, workmanship, and on-the-water sprint, endurance and slalom competitions.

Currently, there are 15 teams entered in this year's competition: 13 teams from U.S. colleges and one international team from Delhi Technological University in Delhi, India. There is also one high school team in the mix, Orono High School from Orono, Minn.

The solar slalom will begin at 9 a.m. on Thursday, June 13, and sprint heats will begin at 1:20 p.m., Friday, June 14. At 9:30 a.m., Saturday, June 15, endurance heats will start, and at 1 p.m., Sunday, June 16, is the sprint championship. An awards ceremony will follow.
