UNI service-learning project supports literacy needs of orphanages

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- University of Northern Iowa education students are working on a service-learning project to support the literacy learning needs of children at orphanages in Haiti and Panama.

UNI students in Methods of Teaching Content Literacy in the Intermediate Grades (LITED 3116) and Teaching Elementary School Social Studies (ELEMECML 3164) are writing books for children in these orphanages. The books will be translated into French and Spanish by students at Wartburg College. Foreign language and art students at Waterloo East High School and Cedar Falls High School are also writing and illustrating books. Approximately 300 books will be sent to the orphanages.

"I hope this experience has helped my UNI students recognize the power of service-learning as a teaching strategy and shown them how they can support active citizenship in their future classrooms through service-learning partnerships," said Sarah Montgomery, UNI assistant professor of curriculum and instruction.
