CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- A $1 million gift for scholarships will benefit students at the University of Northern Iowa. The Gerdin Family Foundation created the Ben and Pat Allen Endowed Scholarship fund in honor of UNI's former president.

Julie Gerdin Durr ('94) said, "Our family members are close personal friends of Ben and Pat. Ben has served on our board of directors at Heartland Express Trucking since 1995. When my dad passed away, the family felt he would have wanted to support Ben and Pat and their contributions to UNI and the state of Iowa by giving a scholarship in their honor."

The endowed scholarship will be awarded annually to one or more undergraduate students to support tuition. The family's intention is to assist hardworking, motivated students.

UNI President Bill Ruud, said, "We are grateful to the Gerdin family for their generous support of our students. This gift adds to the legacy that Ben and Pat left this great university and will impact future generations of students studying at UNI."

The scholarship was given through the UNI Foundation as part of the UNI Scholarship Initiative. To learn more, visit
