CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The University of Northern Iowa Chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) will host a mental health awareness discussion panel from 4 to 5 p.m., Tuesday, March 7, in the University Room of the Maucker Union located on the UNI campus.
UNI PRSSA has partnered with the Campaign to Change Direction in an effort to change the culture of mental health at UNI. The Campaign to Change Direction is a coalition of concerned citizens, nonprofit leaders and leaders from the private sector who have come together to change the culture in America about mental health, mental illness and wellness.
The “UNI Know the Signs” panel discussion will showcase the five signs of mental suffering that include personality change, agitation, withdrawal, poor self-care and hopelessness. Featured panelists will include student members from organizations UNI Proud and To Write Love On Her Arms as well as two mental health professionals from the UNI Counseling Center. Additionally, one representative member from the UNI Department of Residence and one mental health professional from UnityPoint Health Allen Hospital in Waterloo will be participating in the panel.
“We’re hoping this panel brings to light the five signs of mental suffering and provides participants with a way to help,” said Mikayla Lien, case director and UNI PRSSA vice president of communications. “We know it isn’t easy for someone suffering to seek help, but if we’re all able to learn the signs it will make it easier to ensure individuals at UNI get the support that they need.”
Students, faculty, staff and community members are encouraged to attend and participate in this free panel discussion. Light refreshments will be provided. Additional information can be found at www.facebook.com/events/390788921294157/.
