UNI professor to give presentation at world symposium in Rio de Janeiro

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- William Stigliani, University of Northern Iowa professor and adviser to the provost for sustainability curriculum, will deliver a presentation to promote sustainability in curriculum at an international symposium on sustainability in Rio de Janeiro in June.

Stigliani will present an overview of the UNI Faculty Leadership in Sustainability Education program at the symposium on June 5 through 6. In the yearlong program, 26 faculty members from 19 departments revised their courses to reflect some aspect of sustainability.

The World Symposium on Sustainable Development at Universities is an official parallel event to the 2012 United Nations World Conference on Sustainable Development, known as Rio + 20. The original Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro led to the Kyoto Protocol, in which more than 100 nations pledged to reduce their emissions of climate-warming greenhouse gases according to a fixed timetable up to the year 2012.

"The objectives of Rio + 20 are to secure renewed political commitment to sustainable development, assess progress toward internationally agreed upon goals on sustainable development and to address new and emerging challenges," said Stigliani.

The World Symposium on Sustainable Development at Universities will focus on university research activities, curriculum development and outreach programs on sustainability in higher education from more than 30 countries. Stigliani, Catherine Zeman, UNI associate professor in the School of Health, Physical Education and Leisure Services and director of UNI’s Recycling and Reuse Technology Transfer Center, and Gowri Betrabet Gulwadi, UNI associate professor of applied human sciences, co-authored the paper, which was accepted after two rounds of peer review.

Papers presented at the symposium will be published in "Sustainable Development at Universities: New Horizons," part of a long-running series on education and communication on sustainable development.
