CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- The University of Northern Iowa will host its annual fall Commencement ceremony at 11 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 19, in the McLeod Center. This year's Commencement speaker delivering the student address is Jordan Brown, a senior elementary education and middle level education dual major, from Cedar Rapids. Approximately 650 graduates will participate in Commencement. The names of candidates will be read by Gretta Berghammer, professor of theatre, and Deirdre Heistad, director of undergraduate students. The ceremony will be streamed live at live.uni.edu.
Recipients of the Merchant Scholarship are Jordan Brelje and Hayley Graam. This scholarship is awarded to alumni who are attending or plan to attend an accredited graduate or professional school at an educational institution as a full-time student.
Internationally acclaimed bass-baritone Simon Estes will receive an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters during the ceremony.
Following the ceremony, there will be a reception in the McLeod Center with light snacks and beverages. Graduates and guests are encouraged to attend. There will also be areas set up for families and graduates to take pictures. Seating for the event is on a first-come, first-served basis.
The UNI Department of Military Service will host its annual Commissioning Ceremony at 8 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 19, in the Great Reading Room in Seerley Hall. Catherine A. Maher, Fort Dodge, and Kenneth Voorhees, Asbury, will receive their commissions as second lieutenants in the U.S. Army. The guest speaker at the ceremony will be Lt. Col. Chad Stone.
