CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- The University of Northern Iowa's New Horizons Band will perform a spring concert at 7:30 p.m., Monday, May 4, in the Great Hall of the Gallagher-Bluedorn Performing Arts Center on the UNI campus.
The band will perform a variety of traditional concert band repertoire that will include "The Messenger March" by C.L.Barnhouse and "High School Cadets" by John Philip Sousa. "Five Mello Winds" by David Schanke will feature New Horizon Band members Carol Gordon, clarinet; Bob Shafer and Tom Burchers, alto saxophone; Betty Winther and Les Aldrich, tenor saxophone. "Amazing Grace," arranged by Luther Henderson and Paul Murtha, will feature Jo Van De Berg, clarinet; Steve Reints, trumpet; and David Glen-Burns, trombone. Featured xylophone soloist for the concert will be Matt Andreini, UNI percussion instructor.
A reception will be held in the Lobby of the Performing Arts Center immediately following the concert. Admission is free.
The New Horizons Band (NHB) is sponsored by the UNI School of Music and the UNI Community Music School. The group includes 90 musicians who range in age from 50 to 100 years old, with various musical backgrounds who travel from all over Iowa to rehearse and perform. Diana Blake, retired music educator and director of the New Horizons Band, said new members are welcome to join the group.
