CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- The University of Northern Iowa's New Horizons Band will present a holiday concert at 7:30 p.m., Monday, Dec. 14, in the Great Hall of the Gallagher Bluedorn Performing Arts Center (GBPAC). The program will include a variety of marches, traditional concert band repertoire and holiday selections. The event is free and open to the public.
Among the pieces to be performed are "Red's White and Blue March," composed by comedian Red Skelton, "Big Band Bash" and "Pageant" by the American composer Vincent Persichetti. Gordon Bloxham, Steve Reints and Dick Moeller will be featured as trumpet soloists in the performance of "Bugler's Holiday" by Leroy Anderson and "Adeste Fidelis" and "A fireside Christmas" by James Swearingen.
Prior to the concert, the Windy Hills Singers, under the direction of Martha Hansen, will perform holiday selections in the lobby of the Gallagher Bluedorn. Following the UNI New Horizons Band concert, there will be a reception in the GBPAC lobby.
The New Horizons Band is sponsored by the UNI School of Music and UNI Community Music School. The group includes members ages 50 and older with various musical backgrounds who travel from all across Iowa to rehearse and perform. Diana Blake, retired music educator from Waverly, is director of the New Horizons Band.
