University of Northern Iowa students, faculty and staff now have the ability to take UNI with them wherever they go... on their smartphones! The MyUNI mobile app is now available for the iPhone and iPod Touch, Android phones and other phones, such as Windows phones and Blackberry, via mobile Web.
A small team of UNI staff worked before and during winter break to get the app ready for its debut as students return to campus. "This is a purchased framework so we weren't starting at ground zero," said Kevan Forest, associate director of database & application administration. "We had a good starting point from which to work and build upon."
MyUNI, which includes a custom designed user interface, is a great way for students, faculty, staff, alumni and the community to interact with UNI's campus. So far, more than 800 people have downloaded the app.
Features of MyUNI include:
An eLearning app. Access your online course materials through the eLearning app from Blackboard.
Follow your favorite Panther sports teams with the UNI Athletics app.
Use the Directory app to find contact information for students, faculty and staff.
Discover what's cookin' at Piazza, Prexy's, 23rd St. Market and other UNI dining centers with the Menus app.
Find out what's happening at UNI through the news feed.
Send suggestions for MyUNI via a Feedback Form.
MyUNI has something for everyone. "One of the coolest items I think is the augmented reality available in the maps app," said Forest. "For iPhones and iPads, when in maps, if you click on the arrow in the left corner, it shows you where you are with an orange circle that says 'current location.' If you press the orange circle and hold the device perpendicular to the ground, it turns on the camera and includes red pins that show what buildings are in the direction your device is facing and how far away they are."
While MyUNI has a lot to offer, the team is always looking to the future and ways to improve the app – they hope to develop a campus tour app and transit app in the near future.
"We're looking at student feedback for things to include," said Forest. "We really want to have some authenticated content, such as allowing students to complete their registration via the app. We're looking for high value, high impact pieces, so let us know what would help the most."
