CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The University of Northern Iowa Gallery of Art and the UNI Department of Art will present the "Annual Juried Student Art Exhibition" in Kamerick Art Building (KAB) South from Monday, March 20, through Saturday, April 15. An awards ceremony and opening reception will be held at 7 p.m., Monday, March 20, in the KAB Auditorium, Room 111.
This competitive exhibition showcases outstanding artworks by students enrolled in classes in the UNI Department of Art. The juror for this year's competition is Susan Chrysler White, professor of art from the University of Iowa School of Art and Art History. White will make a selection from approximately 350 student entries and choose a number of merit awards and honorable mentions. She will also give a lecture about her work and her perspective on jurying at 6 p.m., Wednesday, March 8, in KAB 111.
White is a painter and public art sculptor who has exhibited her work in over 40 solo and 100 group exhibitions nationally and internationally. She received an M.F.A. from the University of California-Davis and a B.A. from the University of California-Berkley. Recently, she completed a large-scale public art installation for the new UnityPoint Health Prairie Parkway pediatric care facility in Cedar Falls.
White is a recipient of the prestigious Joan Mitchell Foundation Award in Painting and Sculpture as well as two international awards, a Mexican Association for Arts and Popular Culture Award in 1998 and a Greenwich World Hunger Association Grant for the Milagro del Día Project in 1999. This was a two-year long endeavor helping Chichimeca Indian women in rural central Mexico build artistic cooperatives for sustaining communities.
All events are free and open to the public. Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Thursday; noon to 5 p.m., Friday and Saturday; and by appointment. The gallery is located on the main floor of KAB South.
