CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- The University of Northern Iowa Gallery of Art recently held its Annual Juried Student Art Exhibition, presenting nearly $4,500 in purchase and merit awards.

The competition is held each year to showcase the work of undergraduate and graduate students in the Department of Art. More than 400 pieces of art in a variety of media were submitted; however, only 135 were chosen for display by juror Will Mentor, assistant professor of painting and drawing at the University of Iowa. More than 500 people attended the awards ceremony and opening reception.

Darrell Taylor, acting director of the UNI Gallery of Art, said it is important to make the distinction between the awards. Merit awards are cash prizes awarded for excellence and let students retain the artwork. Purchase awards indicate the artwork is sold. Award donors included numerous university departments and organizations as well as extra-university sources such as Jennifer Rettig of Rettig Design, Inc., Spirit Lake, a 1991 M.A. graduate of UNI in art with an emphasis in graphic design, and Porter's Camera Store, Inc., Cedar Falls.

This year, the 2002 Guillaume Art Project Award, went to Gillian G. Christy, a sculpture student from Davenport. Given as a scholarship, the award is in memory of long-time art department head Harry Guillaume. Another highlight of the evening was the dual awarding of Nicole Fullard's painting, 'Jello is Sexy.' Fullard, from Charles City, received a purchase award from the Gallagher-Bluedorn Performing Arts Center and a merit award from the student organization, ArtsUNI.

Awards from the UNI Office of the President included a purchase award to Chris DuPont's poster design 'The Wright Way' and a merit award to Meg Stineman's alabaster sculpture, 'With Child,' both from the UNI Office of the President. DuPont is from Cedar Rapids and Stineman is from Cedar Falls.

Award winners include __(Name)__ of __(Hometown)__, who received a __(Award)__ from __(Award Donor)__ for his/her work __(Name of art work)__.
