CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The University of Northern Iowa is one of the 322 most environmentally responsible colleges in the U.S. and Canada, according to The Princeton Review. The nationally known education services company profiles UNI in the 2013 edition of "The Princeton Review's Guide to 322 Green Colleges."

Developed by The Princeton Review in partnership with the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), the "Guide to 322 Green Colleges" is a free comprehensive guidebook focused solely on institutions of higher education that have demonstrated an above-average commitment to sustainability in terms of campus infrastructure, activities and initiatives.

The 322 schools in this guide were chosen based on the "Green Rating" scores tallied in 2012. The "Green Rating" is a numerical score from 60 to 99 that's based on data from a 50-question survey conducted among hundreds of school administrators about their school's environmental and sustainability-related commitments and initiatives. UNI received a score of 97, the highest score among any Iowa college or university.

"It is an honor for UNI to be included once again in The Princeton Review's 'Guide to 322 Green Colleges,'" said Eric O'Brien, UNI sustainability coordinator. "We have a tremendous amount of positive momentum in this area on campus as a result of our institutional commitment to environmental stewardship and an attractive, well-maintained campus environment that enhances the living and learning experience for our community."

"Among 9,955 college applicants who participated in our 2013 'College Hopes & Worries Survey,' 62 percent said having information about a school's commitment to the environment would influence their decision to apply to or attend the school," said Robert Franek, senior vice president and publisher of The Princeton Review.

Some of the sustainability efforts UNI is being recognized for include connecting the classroom to sustainability through the liberal arts core by offering a number of sustainability-related and focused courses; managing campus grounds responsibly by reducing and even eliminating pollution and introducing nearly 150 acres of prairie to campus; and practicing responsible and efficient purchasing.
