UNI debate students advance to elimination rounds at KU tournament

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- University of Northern Iowa debate students participated in the Kansas University Debate Tournament in Lawrence, Kan., Feb. 21-24.

According to Leah White, UNI director of forensics, the KU tournament is one of the most competitive invitational tournaments the team attends during the spring semester.

In the novice division, the duo of Kelsey Harr, a sophomore from Windsor Heights, and Joe Rankin, a junior from Dubuque, placed first. Harr also received the top speaker award in this division.

In the varsity division, Michelle Kelsey, a junior from Ankeny, and Eric Short, a senior from Brookings, SD., placed fifth out of more than 40 teams. The duo of Melanie Johnson, a freshman from Le Mars, and Mark Langgin, a junior from Ottumwa, placed ninth. Langgin was also the 15th speaker in the division.
