CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The MBA program at the University of Northern Iowa's College of Business Administration is seeking potential clients for its annual Capstone Experience, which is a comprehensive application of the MBA curriculum.

Teams of three to five students analyze a business problem from a strategic perspective. Each team includes members with expertise across a range of business functions, business cultures and analytical methods. Teams are assigned a mentor from the graduate faculty who has expertise in the project topic, a Capstone coordinator and a faculty adviser.

The teams are asked to frame and analyze an issue posed by an area organization and develop an enterprise-level understanding of the organization's industry and business model. They apply an analytical framework to address the client's concerns, present recommendations to the client and report to the MBA faculty with a summary of the situation and its strategic analysis.

Clients are primarily from businesses and nonprofit organizations in northeast Iowa. Former clients have included Wright Flow Technologies, Schofield Chiropractic, The Pella Historical Society, Honary Enterprises, Inc. and the UNI Academic Master Plan Committee.

The projects are completed in the spring of each year and are developed to meet the specific needs of each client. They typically address strategic planning, marketing analysis, process analysis and feasibility questions. A general sequence of events includes:

-       An agreement on the goals, scope and expected outcomes of the project by April.

-       A detailed project plan approved by the client and the MBA faculty by May.

-       A draft report on a substantially completed project to the adviser in June.

-       A former presentation of project results by the end of June.

For organizations wanting to propose a Capstone Experience project for the upcoming year, contact Capstone coordinator Dale Cyphert at 319-273-6150 or dale.cyphert@uni.edu
