UNI CEEE to host Cedar Valley Local Food Fair

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- The Cedar Valley Local Food Fair will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, March 15, at the Grout Museum District, 503 South St., Waterloo. Visitors can meet Community-Supported Agriculture (CSA) farmers and learn about their farms, sample recipes that can be made at home and learn how to find fresh, local food in the Cedar Valley.

Featured events include "Tiny But Mighty Popcorn," which examines ancient heirloom popcorn grown in Shellsburg; "FRED: Food and Resource Education Demonstration Program," in which participants learn how to cook local foods; and "Food Preservation Techniques," which provides resources about canning and other food preservation techniques.

For $1, participants can make their own butter using local Hansen's Dairy cream, watch a television series that explores farms, restaurants and ingredients that make Iowa food uniquely Iowan and tour the Grout Museum's exhibit "It's Not Your Grandparents Farm, Or Is It?"

Several exhibitors will have booths, including Hy-Vee, the UNI Local Food Program, FRED, Blue Zones, Healthy Cedar Valley Coalition, Northeast Iowa Food Bank, ISU Extension and Outreach, Hansen's Dairy, Northern Iowa Shrimp and Timber Ridge Bison.

This event is free and open to the public. It is hosted by the Cedar Valley CSA Farmers, UNI's Center for Energy & Environmental Education (CEEE) and the Grout Museum District. Event parking is located under the Highway 218 overpass.
