CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- Two University of Northern Iowa students have been honored as recipients of The Lux Service Award for their service to the university.

This year's recipients are Joel Anderson, a UNI senior philosophy and accounting major from Clive, Iowa and Ashley Stewart, a UNI family services major from Gary, Ind.

The Lux Service Award is the most prestigious award given to undergraduate students each academic year to acknowledge their service to UNI. The award takes its name from the Latin word for light. This is most notably represented in the official university seal, which features the burning lamp of knowledge. Since 1984, the award has been conferred annually in the spirit of keeping the light of service to others burning brightly at UNI. The award is presented by the Dean of Students and sponsored by the UNI Alumni Association. The recipients will be recognized during the 2012 commencement ceremonies.

The Lux Service Award recipients were chosen by a selection committee based on nominations from UNI faculty, students and staff. Requirements include a minimum 3.0 GPA, completion of at least 90 credit hours and demonstration of service to UNI during the recipient's university career.
