Three UNI graduates receive Lux Service Award

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- The University of Northern Iowa presented three graduating students with the Lux Service Award for their exemplary service to the university:

Daye Pope is a political communication major from Clear Lake. Pope has been actively involved in UNI Proud, the Feminist Action League, Panther Magazine, the Northern Iowan and Northern Iowa Student Government (NISG). Pope served as president of UNI Proud for two years and was part of the group of students who called for the new LGBT* Center on campus. Pope has volunteered with various political campaigns, including serving as an intern for Sen. Tom Harkin in Washington, D.C.

Kayla McCormick is an exercise science and sports psychology major from Caledonia, Minn. McCormick has served as the captain, co-president and secretary of the swim team, representative for the Student Athlete Advisory Committee for the Missouri Valley Conference, team leader for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and a team captain for Relay For Life. She also created the Hygiene Hijack program, which collects travel-sized toiletries to donate to local shelters and the Salvation Army.

Ramya Varadaraju is a computer science major from India. Varadaraju has served as president, vice president of special programs and secretary of the International Student Association, communications specialist for the International Student Promoters, secretary of Panthers Allied with Local Schools, and mentor to a student in the Waterloo School District. She also served as the NISG director of International Student Affairs.

A selection committee chose the Lux Service Award recipients based on nominations from UNI faculty, students and staff. Requirements include being scheduled to graduate in 2014, a minimum 2.5 GPA and demonstration of service to UNI during the recipient's academic career that will leave a lasting impact on the university community.
