CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- TheatreUNI will present "RENT" at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 29, Friday, Oct. 30 and Nov. 5, 6 and 7, and at 2:30 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 1, through Sunday, Nov. 8, in the Strayer-Wood Theatre on the University of Northern Iowa campus.
Jonathan Larson's musical "RENT" won the 1996 Tony Award for Best Musical and the 1996 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. Larson transposes "La Bohème's" world of 19th-century Paris to 100 years later in New York's East Village. The group of would-be artists struggle with romance, identity, poverty, gentrification, prejudice and the lure of fame. "RENT" reinvented the modern musical and has had a profound influence on such 21st-century shows as "Spring Awakening" and "Hamilton."
"RENT" is the second offering of the Strayer-Wood Theatre's 2015-16 season. The production is directed by professor of theatre Jay Edelnant and associate professor of music Mira Sadeghpour. The choreographer is instructor of health Mandy Masmar. Scenery design is by associate professor of design and production Mark Parrott.
