CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- The University of Northern Iowa's Department of Special Education, via Continuing and Distance Education, will offer a Master of Arts in Education degree, Special Education Consultant emphasis, beginning spring 2016.

This program addresses the need across the state for highly effective special education consultants and special education instructional coaches to provide collaborative, job-embedded and personalized professional development to general and special educators to improve outcomes for children with disabilities.

"We are very excited to offer the Special Education Consultant MAE program as a distance education forum," said Susan Etscheidt, program coordinator. "Highly effective special educators will be invited to join this two-year program, which will prepare them to serve as special education instructional coaches and consultants. We are hoping to attract teachers from all school districts and Area Education Agencies in Iowa. Working with both general and special educators, these coaches and consultants will help teachers meet the needs of students with disabilities in their classrooms."

The program uses a cohort model in which a group of students moves through the course sequence together. Courses are offered using a combination of Adobe Connect, a desktop video conferencing system, and eLearning, an online Blackboard learning management system.
