CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The Rod Library at the University of Northern Iowa will host the fifth annual RodCon from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, April 7.

RodCon is a mini comic book convention where people with common interests can come together to share their love of all things pop culture. Activities will include a costume contest, kids zone, escape room, panels, demonstrations, trivia, and art and merchandise exhibitions.

“As the only large-scale and free-entry convention of its type in the state of Iowa, RodCon is a huge draw—last year attracting more than 3,000 people. Attendees range from comic vendors and tri-state comic artists to avid readers and youth who’ve never held a comic book or graphic novel,” said library assistant Melinda Beland.

Frenchy Lunning will serve as RodCon’s keynote panelist. Lunning is a Ph.D. professor of design history and cultural studies at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. Lunning has written books such as “Subcultural Fashion: Fetish and Style” and “Cosplay: The Masque of Fandom.” Lunning will discuss how to analyze and critique anime and manga.

“After 38 years of teaching and grading student papers, I have a pretty good idea how to analyze and critique anime and manga texts as well as any other object you are assigned. I will show you some techniques and shortcuts that will score you that ‘A,’” said Lunning.

The event is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Beland at 319-273-2802 or melinda.beland@uni.edu, or visit www.library.uni.edu/rod-con/
