Results from the annual State of Iowa Physics Competition

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- The University of Northern Iowa Department of Physics hosted the State of Iowa Physics Competition Wednesday, April 17, in the McLeod Center on the UNI campus.

Approximately 185 students from 21 different schools participated. Decorah High School placed first, led by instructor Tim Hayes; Washington High School placed second, led by instructor Jeff Richard; and Wahlert Catholic High School placed third, led by Tom Stierman.

Individual event winners were Tripoli High School in the self-propelled catapult event, led by instructor Kallie Greenwald; Washington High school in the mousetrap car event, led by Jeff Richard; Decorah High School in the bridge building event, led by instructor Tim Hayes; Turkey Valley High School in the soda straw arm event, led by instructor Caroline Scheidel; Wahlert High School in the challenge problem event, led by instructor Tom Stierman; and Cedar Falls High School in the materials recovery facility event, led by instructors Kenton Swartley and Maria Hoekstra.
