CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- Northern Iowa Student Government (NISG) will host an event with Cedar Falls Fire Chief John Schilling to inform students about renter's rights and responsibilities, as well as the process for grievances with landlords. "Know your Rental Rights" will be from 6 to 7 p.m., Wed., Nov. 11, in the Elm Room at Maucker Union.
"As representatives of the student body, we (NISG) find it our responsibilities to educate students and inform them of their rights as first-time renters," said Danielle Massey, external relations committee chair of NISG.
Last year the Rental Housing Ordinance was passed in Cedar Falls, which brought to the forefront how uninformed many first-time renters are.
Schilling and his staff will address code enforcement in rental houses, such as how to deal with large amounts of mold in a house. They will also advise students on what to do when issues arise with their landlord, what to do if they suspect their landlord is taking advantage of them and educate students what the law is.
