As part of the upcoming It Gets Better performance at Gallagher Bluedorn, community events have been organized to spark discussion around bullying and equality. The first event will take place Thursday, Aug. 13, at the Octopus on College Hill for a roundtable discussion about the question "It's getting better – now what?"
Susan Hill, director of UNI's Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning, will moderate the discussion. Performances by Amelia & Melina, AMZ, Stormy O’Brink and Xavia will follow the discussion. The event is hosted by Josh Hamzee, University of Northern Iowa Speech and Debate, and Gallagher Bluedorn Performing Arts Center.
Saturday, Aug. 22 will mark the second event of the It Gets Better series. Taking place at Cedar Valley Pridefest, a booth will be set up by Gallagher Bluedorn to take video testimonials with the message "It Gets Better." These testimonials will be used at the event and be shared with the touring company, including the Gay Men's Chorus of Los Angeles (GMCLA). More information about Pridefest can be found at www.cedarvalleypride.com.
The GMCLA will be in residency in support of the It Gets Better performance on Saturday, Sept. 19. A full list of outreach events can be found at gbpac.com/itgetsbetter. This project is sponsored in part by the Iowa Arts Council, a division of the Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs, and the National Endowment for the Arts.
Ticket prices for It Gets Better begin at $14 and can be purchased at any UNItix location, online at gbpac.com/ItGetsBetter or by phone at 319-273-4849.
