CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – As of Oct. 8, the Iowa Waste Reduction Center (IWRC) at the University of Northern Iowa officially launched the first of six courses as part of the Iowa Environmental Training Program, an innovative online educational resource for businesses and organizations. The program features relevant topics to keep environmental professionals up to date with regulations, as well as learn pollution prevention and waste reduction strategies.
Waste Characterization and Management, the first course, focuses on the general identification of waste streams and determining proper handling, storage and disposal. It examines regulations defined by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency - Resource Conservation and Recovery Act and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.
For nearly 25 years, the IWRC has been assisting Iowa businesses with their environmental needs. "One of the most frequent requests we get is for training to easily keep clients updated with regulations. Developing this on an interactive, online platform allows us to reach out across the entire state while being able to keep content current continuously. It allows clients to access the information beyond initial training when it is convenient for them," said IWRC interim director, Jim Olson.
In addition to the initial course, the program will cover topics relating to the Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, Emergency Planning and Community Right to Know Act and much more. This is the IWRC’s second initiative into online education. The Iowa Environmental Training Program includes comprehensive courses covering an array of regulations that span across many industries while SprayItRight, developed in 2008, simply focuses on helping a specific industry comply with one regulation.
