Improving literacy in elementary education

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- The University of Northern Iowa College of Education, Richard O. Jacobson Center for Comprehensive Literacy and the Reading Recovery Center of Iowa will host two literacy events April 18 and 19.

The first annual Jacobson Center and Reading Recovery Literacy Academy will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., Thursday, April 18, in Maucker Union, Old Central Ballroom. The event will focus on the Partnerships in Comprehensive Literacy model and Reading Recovery. It will include specific sessions for comprehensive literacy coaches and classroom teachers, comprehensive intervention model coaches and interventionists, Reading Recovery teachers and administrators. The academy will feature keynote speaker Richard Elmore, professor at the Harvard Graduate School of Education.

The 45th Annual Elementary Literacy Conference and the Iowa Reading Recovery Conference will take place from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Friday, April 19, at the Schindler Education Center. The conference will include sessions for elementary, literacy and Reading Recovery teachers. Steven Kellogg, an author and illustrator of children's books, is the featured keynote speaker.
