CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- For the past two decades, the University of Northern Iowa's Jazz Band One has been producing first-rate records. Their most recent release, "The Hard Way," is creating waves in the jazz community. Reviewer Jack Bowers from All About Jazz, a website produced by jazz evangelists, jazz professionals and web technicians, said in a recent review, "The band is stout as a rampart, the soloists sharp and engaging."

"The Hard Way" marks the band's 20th release and Chris Merz's 10th as director. "We are thrilled by the wonderful review of the CD," said Merz. The CD features both live recordings as well as studio efforts. Jon Snell, a sophomore majoring in music: jazz studies, composed one of the tracks.

The album costs $10 and can be purchased from Merz. The profits will help fund the band's next record.

Looking to the future, Merz said he is "particularly excited" about their next release, titled "This is the Band," going on to say that it will be an exclusively in-house effort, with all nine tracks being written by band members.
