Award-winning filmmaker, writer and activist to visit UNI

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – Byron Hurt, an award-winning documentary filmmaker, will visit the University of Northern Iowa to screen two of his works. The first event will feature the film "Hip-Hop: Beyond Beats and Rhymes" at 6:30 p.m., to be followed by a lecture and discussion with Hurt at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 11, in Lang Auditorium. The second night will feature "Soul Food Junkies" at 6:30 p.m., to be followed by a lecture and discussion with Hurt at 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 12, in Lang Hall Auditorium.filmmaker Byron Hurt

Since 1993, Hurt has used his documentaries, voice and writings to broaden and deepen how people think about race and gender. Hurt has lectured at hundreds of campuses, presented at numerous professional conferences and trained thousands of young men and women on issues related to gender, race, sex, violence, music and visual media. His work has been featured in The New York Times, The Washington Post and The Boston Globe, among many others.

"Soul Food Junkies" explores the culture of Southern soul food while documenting the fatal illness of a family's matriarch, which was caused by the food she was eating. The documentary recognizes not only the politics of the food industry, but challenges within the industry as well.

"Hip-Hop: Beyond Beats and Rhymes" examines masculinity, violence, homophobia and sexism in hip-hop music and culture through interviews with artists, academics and fans. After its premiere at the 2006 Sundance Film Festival, the documentary won an award for best documentary at the San Francisco Black Film Festival, the audience award at the Roxbury Film Festival, and was named one of the best documentary films in 2007 by the Chicago Tribune.
